The Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, placing 'Vande Mataram' on par with National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana'. At present, the law prescribes penalties, including imprisonment, for disturbing or preventing the singing of National Anthem. The amendment would extend these provisions to Vande Mataram, making such violations a cognisable offence.
