CSIR-NIIST has partnered with the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), to set up vegan leather manufacturing units in Northeast India using agro-waste like banana stems and rice straw. The initiative aims to empower local farmers and women’s groups, reduce pollution, and promote green entrepreneurship through sustainable, chemical-free alternatives to synthetic leather.
