Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer originally synthesised the chemical sildenafil to treat hypertension and heart conditions. However, in trials, male participants reported side-effects of erection within 30-60 minutes of consumption. Pfizer then branded the drug as Viagra, which was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998 to treat "erectile dysfunction".
