The practice of saying 'o'clock' when telling the time is attributed to times when the Sun was used as a reference point for time, with the solar time being slightly different than the clock time. The phrase "it is seven of the clock" would help distinguish the sun and clock time. Over time 'o'clock' became an abbreviation for the same.
