A two-minute video explaining why some coins in the United States have ridges, states that earlier the coins consisted of valuable metals such as silver and gold. The ridges were then introduced as a counter measure to the cutting off of coins in order to sell the shavings. The ridges nowadays seek to help the visually impaired distinguish between denominations.
