Vietnam will abolish the death penalty for eight offences from next month, including embezzlement and attempts to overthrow the government. Those sentenced to death for these offences before July 1 but not yet executed will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. This includes real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, who was handed the death penalty over $12-billion fraud case.
