Previously unknown volcanic eruptions may have triggered a chain reaction that led to the Black Death, which killed millions in Europe in the 14th century, according to a study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. By analysing tree rings, researchers found that the eruption likely caused a drop in temperature and failed harvests.
