The vulturine guinea fowl’s electric blue feathers contain no pigment. Scientists say the colour comes from microscopic feather structures that scatter light, reflecting only blue wavelengths. The striking plumage helps flock communication and survival in open savannas. The bird’s structural colour is now inspiring research in optics and materials science.
