Crude oil extraction is expected to begin soon at West Bengal's Ashoknagar oil field in North 24 Parganas, around 48 km from Kolkata. Discovered by ONGC in 2018, the site is considered eastern India's first oil and gas-producing region. If developed successfully, the project could boost domestic oil production, strengthen energy security and reduce India's dependence on global energy markets.
