What are Blue Holes?

Blue Holes are large undersea caverns or sinkholes that are open to the surface and that develop in a bank or island composed of a carbonate bedrock. They vary in shape, size and depth but most are hotspots for ecological diversity of plants and animals. The Taam Ja' Blue Hole in Mexico has been named as the world's deepest.
