What are electric eels and how can they generate electricity?
short by Swati Dubey / on Wednesday, 18 September, 2024
Electric eels, part of order Gymnotiformes, generate electricity using specialised muscle cells called electrocytes. These cells, located in three organs - the main organ, Hunter's organ, and Sach's organ - allow eels to produce electric shocks. When triggered, electrocytes release impulses by creating a voltage difference, with some generating up to 860 volts, far exceeding a standard UK socket.
