What are Greenland sharks, vertebrates that can live over 400 yrs?
short by Swati Dubey / on Friday, 1 August, 2025
Greenland sharks, a rare deep-sea species, hold record for longest-living vertebrate, with one female estimated to be nearly 400 years old. Found in cold, dark waters, they grow only one centimetre a year, maturing at around 150 years. The low temperature at cold depths slows metabolism and minimises their cellular damage, allowing them to live extraordinarily longer than other vertebrates.
