What are passengers' rights when flight is delayed or cancelled?

Passengers have to be provided refreshments if a flight with two-and-a-half-hour duration is delayed by two hours. A passenger has option to get alternate flight or full refund if a flight is delayed by over six hours. In case of cancellation, passengers should be informed at least 24 hours before departure. However, airlines aren't obliged to compensate in extraordinary circumstances.
