What are postal ballots and how are they counted?

Postal ballots, also known as mail-in ballots, allow voters to cast their vote without visiting polling booth. This option is provided to people who aren't physically present in their home constituency. Postal ballots are counted separately before EVM votes. Since these ballots are counted first, they often contribute to early lead patterns seen on television during initial hours of counting.
