According to cardiologist Dr Tariq Rashid, frequent use of antacids to treat stomach burn and acidity may have "unforeseen effects on the heart". Calcium-based antacids may interfere with heart's electrical signalling, causing arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats. Proton pump inhibitors, another type of antacids, may impair blood vessels' inner lining and increase risk of chronic kidney disease.
