What are solar flares and how do they form?

Solar flares are bursts of intense radiation released by the Sun that carry energy equivalent to millions of nuclear bombs exploding simultaneously. The solar system's largest explosions occur when Sun's magnetic fields realign to expel built-up energy via charged particles. These particles collide with Earth's protective magnetic fields to produce auroras often dubbed "Northern Lights".
