The 1981 Bihar accident claimed an estimated 500 lives after a train derailed and fell into Bagmati river, while around 300 were killed in a 1995 collision between two trains in UP. The 1999 Gaisal tragedy killed around 290 after trains collided in West Bengal. In April, 13 schoolchildren were killed after their bus collided with a train in UP.
