What are the sources of vitamin D?

Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. The body forms vitamin D naturally after exposure to sunlight. The food sources of vitamin D include sunlight-exposed mushrooms, oily fish (salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel), red meat, liver, egg yolks and fortified foods.
