The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that diphtheria, which is a bacterial infection spread through respiratory particles, is on the rise. Its common symptoms include sore throat, fever and difficulty in breathing and swallowing. In severe cases, the bacteria produce a poison causing life-threatening damage to heart, kidneys and nerves. WHO said it can be prevented with vaccines.
