The U.S. stock market crash triggered the depression. Consumers had excess money due to easy credit, leading to irrational spending and stock market speculation. This speculative bubble burst, causing the stock market to crash. This led to bank runs, as people rushed to withdraw their savings, eventually causing numerous bank failures and an economic slump.
