Suchir Balaji, Indian-origin former OpenAI researcher who's been found dead, had criticised the company's use of copyrighted data to train ChatGPT, thereby breaking copyright law. He said the Sam Altman-led company made illegal copies of copyrighted data for AI to study and analyse. He said AI models could "imitate" the data to compete with original sources, destroying their commercial viability.
