What exactly makes a star a star?

Astronomers say stars begin as huge clouds of gas in space, but they become true stars only if enough gravitational pressure builds inside them to fuse hydrogen into helium for a long period. This creates intense heat and light that are a star’s signature. If fusion fails to begin, the gas forms a “failed star” known as a brown dwarf.
