On April 10, 1917, Mahatma Gandhi reached Bihar's Champaran to understand the situation of farmers, who were being forced to grow indigo. When Gandhiji was asked by the Britishers to leave the district, he resisted and then got arrested. Upset over the arrest, Champaran residents protested non-violently outside the jail and other government buildings, leading to Mahatma's release.
