What happens if a taxpayer dies before filing the ITR?

According to the Income-Tax Act, 2025, a deceased person's tax liability doesn't end with their death. Their "legal representative" must file the return for the period from the start of the relevant tax year until the date of death. If the person dies before filing the return for the previous year, the representative must file that outstanding return as well.
