Bab el-Mandeb, or 'Gate of Tears', is a strategic strait which connects Red Sea to Indian Ocean, with 20,000 vessels passing through it annually. If the passage gets blocked by Houthis, who have long threatened to choke it, the impact could be severe amid Iran's closure of Strait of Hormuz. Together the routes carry 30% of the world's seaborne oil.
