What happens in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle

After ovulation, the body enters the luteal phase, a stage where progesterone becomes the dominant hormone. This hormone thickens the uterine lining to prepare for a fertilised egg to implant. If pregnancy does not occur, hormone levels fall and menstruation begins. Dr Devyani explains that these hormonal shifts also cause common premenstrual symptoms such as bloating or mood changes.
