Most cough syrups contain Dextromethorphan or DXM - which suppresses the urge to cough by affecting the center part of your brain. It also helps block the effects of histamines, which cause allergy, having a drying effect. However, doctors say when overdosed, DXM can cause hallucinations and feelings of euphoria, and in extreme cases, overdosing can even be fatal.
