Chewing gum shouldn't be swallowed as it doesn't disintegrate and go through the digestive process like other food items. Swallowing gum, which is made of synthetic or natural rubber mixed with sweetener and flavours, is similar to swallowing rubber. A video describes how the body reacts to swallowed gum and the possibility of it causing an intestinal obstruction.
