What happens when you wear contact lenses for too long?

Using contact lenses for long periods can cause lack of oxygen in the eye and leave tiny cuts in the outer layer, which protects it against dust, water, and bacteria. These cuts can later become a breeding ground for bacteria, possibly leading to eye infections. Additionally, contact lenses when exposed to water can also cause swollen eyes.
