A "starter marriage" is a brief first marriage (lasting five years or less) that ends in divorce without children. Coined by journalist Deborah Schupack in 1994, starter marriage often occurs in early-to-mid 20s. It generally describes unions between young adults who later treat the experience as a learning phase for subsequent, longer-lasting relationships.
