What is 'Waqf' under Waqf Act?

Waqf properties are dedicated exclusively for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law. The existing Waqf Act allows Waqf boards to decide whether a property belongs to the board or not. Around 30 Waqf boards currently control 8.7 lakh properties spanning 9.4 lakh acres. The centre has introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to ensure boards register properties with district collectors.
