Indian Army's operation to remove Khalistani militants from Punjab's Golden Temple in 1984 was codenamed 'Operation Blue Star'. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who had also taken refugee at the temple, was killed in the operation. The holy site sustained damage during the operation, which was launched under ex-PM Indira Gandhi's rule. Later, Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards assassinated her in revenge.
