What is a 'megaquake'?

A megaquake is an exceptionally large earthquake which has a magnitude of 8 or more on the Richter scale. The magnitude of an earthquake is related to the area of the fault line. The largest-ever earthquake of 9.5 magnitude occurred in Chile in 1960 on an almost 1,000 mile-long and 150 mile-wide fault, as per the US Geological Survey.
