What is a barrier lake & how can it trigger massive floods?

Nepal faces the threat of another flood due to breach of a barrier lake formed in Tibet. US Geological Survey said a barrier lake is a temporary lake formed when landslide debris blocks a stream or river. Such lakes can hold large amounts of water and, if they overflow, they can release millions of cubic metres, causing catastrophic downstream flooding.
