What is a leap second?
short by Pragya Swastik / on Saturday, 6 July, 2024
A leap second ensures the clocks we use to see time are in sync with the actual rotation of the Earth. The correction is needed as Earth's rotation speed may vary due to geological events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A leap second is added when there's a gap of 0.9 seconds in the Earth's rotation and time in clocks.
