In a penumbral lunar eclipse, only the more diffuse outer shadow of Earth, the penumbra, falls on the moon's face. A penumbral lunar eclipse is comparatively difficult to observe than a total or a partial lunar eclipse. This year's third lunar eclipse, a penumbral, occurred today and was observed in parts of Africa, parts of North America among others.
