What is Anaclitic depression?

Anaclitic depression, or hospitalism, is seen in infants who have formed normal attachments but are abruptly separated from their mothers and placed in hospitals or institutions. Following separation, these infants become withdrawn, depressed, emotionally unresponsive, and physically vulnerable, but show recovery once maternal care or consistent surrogate caregiving is restored.
