Investigations by UP authorities revealed a large-scale illegal trade involving the diversion of legally manufactured codeine cough syrup into black market. The syrup was allegedly sold for non-medical use. Officials say it's being misused as an intoxicant. Recently, officials seized over two crore bottles of codeine-based cough syrup during a raid in Varanasi, valued at over ₹100 crore.
