What is cortisol, widely known as the body’s stress hormone?

Cortisol is a steroid hormone, often referred to as the body's stress hormone. Cortisol has many functions, like mediating the stress response, regulating metabolism, the inflammatory response, and immune function, according to NIH. Too much cortisol can lead to weight gain, reduced fertility and it can also affect mood, resulting in depression. Too little cortisol can cause constant tiredness.
