Freestyle chess, which is being aggressively promoted by world number one chess player Magnus Carlsen, is the Fischer-Random chess that was created by former world champion Bobby Fischer in 1996. It is also known as Chess960 on accounts of its 960 possible starting positions. Chess960 involves the randomisation of the back rank when starting.
