Goa's Lairai festival, during which a stampede killed at least 6 people at Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao, is an annual religious festival where people worship Goddess Lairai, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The festival involves an 'Agnidivya' ritual, in which devotees known as Dhonds walk barefoot across burning embers. The ritual takes place in early hours.
