Heme iron, found in red meat and other animal products, has been linked to 26% increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared to non-haem iron, a study found. Heme iron is derived from hemoglobin and myoglobin. It's easily absorbed by the body. While essential for oxygen transport and energy production, excessive intake has been linked to health risks.
