What is hungry bone syndrome?

Hungry bone syndrome (HBS) occurs when a person has very low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia) and it typically develops within 18 hours of parathyroid or thyroid surgery. This syndrome is treatable and its symptoms are muscle cramps or spasms, bone pain, fatigue, depression and restlessness among others. Metastatic tumours of the bones raise risk of hungry bone syndrome.
