Japanese encephalitis is a rare viral illness typically transmitted by mosquitoes (Culex species) and primarily affects animals, particularly through migrating birds, but can occasionally infect humans. The majority of cases occur in children below 15 years of age and the case-fatality rate among infected can be as high as 30%, according to WHO. Its symptoms include mild fever and headache.
