What is known about Katchatheevu, the island India 'ceded' to Sri Lanka in 1974?

Katchatheevu is a small uninhabited island between India and Sri Lanka that is 1.6 km in length and it was a disputed territory. However, in 1974, then-PM Indira Gandhi 'ceded' it to Sri Lanka by signing the 'Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime agreement'. The agreement was widely protested in Tamil Nadu. The only structure on the island is St Anthony's shrine.
