What is known about rare 'flesh-eating' bacteria spreading in Japan?

Japan has seen record cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome- disease caused by a rare "flesh-eating bacteria" that can kill people within 48 hours. Symptoms, including limb pain, swelling, fever, low blood pressure, etc., develop rapidly and are followed by necrosis (tissue death), breathing problems, organ failure and death. People aged over 50 are more prone to the disease.
