Eritrea, ranked at the bottom of the World Press Freedom Index, won independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war and Isaias Afwerki has been its President ever since. With 6.2 million population, it's a one-party state and highly-militarised society bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Conflict and drought have affected agriculture-dependent Eritrea, one of Africa's poorest nations.
