Five people have died following an outbreak of deadly parrot fever across Europe, with five countries reporting "an unusual and unexpected increase" in cases. Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever, is an acute respiratory illness caused by bacteria Chlamydophila psittaci. The flu-like illness is caused by breathing in the dust from an infected bird's secretions or through beak-to-mouth contact.
