What is popcorn lung?

Popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) is a rare condition in which lung damage starts in small airways called bronchioles. It is caused by inhaled chemicals, lung infection, autoimmune disease, or rejection of a transplanted lung. Although bronchioles may heal normally, sometimes inflammation and subsequent healing process cause scar tissue to build up, which can result in respiratory failure.
