Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging protocol is designed to replace SMS. While SMS is powered only by cellular networks, RCS works through both cellular and internet-powered networks. RCS chats show users when someone is typing, offer read receipts, location sharing, group chats and high-resolution photo sharing. Available on most Android phones, RCS is coming to iPhones later in 2024.
